Description

John Haynes-Williams, British 1836-1908- Mute appeal; oil on canvas, signed 'JHaynes Williams' (lower left), bears label for the Boydell Galleries, Liverpool, attached to the lower stretcher bar, 91.5 x 71 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: John Haynes-Williams is perhaps best-known for his Spanish-inspired scenes, often showing rustic figures going about their daily activities or models posing in elaborately rendered traditional or historical dress. The present, poignant scene is typical of Haynes-Williams's genre paintings, which are often imbued with emotion and sentiment. This approach is echoed in a picture called 'The Sermon', offered at Bonhams, 21 January 2015, lot 53 (£10,625), which sensitively portrays members of a church congregation, moved by the words of the priest.
