John Varley, Jnr., British 1850-1933- View of the Taj Mahal from Agra Fort; and Street Scene in India; pencil and watercolour on paper, each signed and dated 'John. Varley. 92' (lower left), 25.3 x 34.7 cm., two (2). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: John Varley Junior was the grandson of John Varley (1778-1842), and the son of Albert Fleetwood (1804-1876). Varley Jnr. travelled widely, visiting Egypt (sailing there in 1874 in a yacht he built himself), Japan, India and Sri Lanka amongst many other countries, producing a number of paintings and drawings of the landscapes and people that he encountered. The present works undoubtedly originate from the artist's travels to India, and convey a sense of the bright light which saturates the landscape.
