George Chinnery, British 1774-1852- Study of a Chinese junk; pen and ink on paper, 10.3 x 10.5 cm. Provenance: with Spink, London. Anon. sale, Christie's, South Kensington, 8 July 2008, lot 456. Note: Chinnery was a prolific draughtsman who produced a number of sketches during his travels in south China, where he was the only western painter in the early to mid 19th century. Chinnery's works offered glimpses into the daily lives and customs of the people of southern China, which fascinated his British audiences. Similar studies to the present example are held in the Yale Collection of British Art [B1977.14.5220] and the Victoria & Albert Museum [E.2102-1921 and E.2196-1921].
