Edward William Cooke, RA, British 1811-1880- Palermo Cathedral; pencil on paper, 24.8 x 17.8 cm. Provenance: with the Fry Gallery, London. Note: Cooke was the son of the engraver George Cooke (1781-1834), and was undoubtedly influenced by the approach of his father's friends, including figures such as Clarkson Frederick Stanfield (1793-1867) and David Roberts (1796-1864), and by James Stark (1794-1859) under whom he studied. Cooke travelled widely across Europe and North Africa, producing evocative architectural and landscape sketches, of which the present work is a classic example.
