Description

David Cox, OWS, British 1783-1859- Crossing the Moor; and A figure on horseback in an expansive hillside landscape, possibly depicting 'Brixton Hill'; watercolours on paper, the first signed and dated 'David Cox.1847' (lower left), the first 17.7 x 27.2 cm., the second 20 x 44.3 cm., two (2). Provenance: Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 3 February 1993, lot 153. Private Collection, UK. Note: David Cox studied under John Varley (1778-1842), and was clearly heavily influenced by the latter's approach, becoming, like Varley, one of the most significant British watercolourists of his time and beyond. He was also a major figure in the Birmingham School of landscape artists, alongside Thomas Baker (1809-1864) and Thomas Creswick (1811-1869).
