View of Cader Idris from Kymmer Abbey, …
Description

David Cox, OWS, British 1783-1859- View of Cader Idris from Kymmer Abbey, North Wales; pencil and watercolour on paper, signed and dated 'David Cox / 1849' (lower left), 21.7 x 31.4 cm. Provenance: with Charles Nicholls & Son, Manchester. Property from a deceased estate, UK. Note: David Cox studied under John Varley (1778-1842), and was clearly heavily influenced by the latter's approach, becoming, like Varley, one of the most significant British watercolourists of his time and beyond. He was also a major figure in the Birmingham School of landscape artists, alongside Thomas Baker (1809-1864) and Thomas Creswick (1811-1869). Cox Snr. depicted the same view of Cader Idris on multiple occasions, producing an almost identical, slightly smaller, composition which sold at Christie's, London, 9 June 2005 (lot 46), for £3,800.
