George Edwards, FRS, British 1694-1773- The Greenland Buck; hand-coloured etching, signed 'G. Edwards' (within the plate, lower centre) and titled 'The Greenland Buck' (within the plate, lower right), 18.4 x 23.3 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Edwards was a prominent naturalist in the 18th century, and has been described as the 'father of British ornithology', with his publications including 'A Natural History of Uncommon Birds' and 'Gleanings of Natural History', and it is from the latter that the present illustration originates. Edwards' writings were in turn referenced by Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) in his updated 'Systema Naturae' in 1758.
