John Augustus Atkinson, British 1775-1833- Bathing horses; pen, ink, and watercolour on paper, 16.3 x 23.9 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Atkinson travelled in 1784 to St Petersburg, where his uncle James Walker (1748-1808) was engraver to Empress Catherine II (1729-1796), also known as Catherine the Great. It was based on this experience that he produced his publication 'A Picturesque Representation of the Manners, Customs, and Amusements of the Russians, 1803–1804', consisting of a number of illustrations by Atkinson, including a printed version of the present composition.
