Bernhard von Guérard, German c.1770-1836- Portrait of a lady, facing right, wearing a white dress and purple shawl, the hair in loose ringlets; watercolour on ivory, oval, signed 'Bernhard de Guérard' (centre left, along the edge), 7.2 x 5.8 cm. Ivory submission reference: 5RSXAB9G. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Vienna-born miniaturist Bernhard von Guerhard spent most of his career in Germany, where he enjoyed the patronage of many royal and noble clients, including members of the imperial household and from the princely Schwarzenburg family. He is also recorded as a court painter to Franz I of Austria. The miniature presented here likely dates from the early 19th century, like Guérard’s portrait of Maria Ludovika, Archduchess of Austria-Este, which was offered at Sotheby’s, 5th December 2019, lot 348.
