Description

Adam Buck, Irish 1759-1833- Portrait of a young man, bust-length, wearing a black coat and black stock; watercolour and bodycolour on card, signed and dated 'Adam Buck 1822' (lower left), 12.3 x 9.7 cm. Note: The present work is characteristic of Buck's sensitive, highly-detailed portraits, typically executed in watercolour, which convey a striking sense of the sitter's presence. The artist was a prolific portraitist who enjoyed success in his lifetime, producing a number of portraits which are similar to the present work, including those of Peter and Bernard Burke (Peter Darvall, A Regency Buck: Adam Buck, 2015, no.135 and no.136), painted in 1825 and 1828 respectively, just after the present work.
