Description

Circle of Thomas Beach, British 1738-1806- Portrait of a gentleman, half-length, wearing a cream waiscoat and blue jacket, and a black necktie; oil on canvas, feigned oval, 30.5 x 25 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work resembles Beach's typical half-length portraits, which are at once formal and intimate, conveying a striking sense of the sitter's presence. Indeed, the present portrait somewhat recalls Beach's portrait of Edward Phelips VI (1753–1792), now held by the National Trust at Montacute House, Wiltshire [597929].
