Note: Anton von Zach (1747-1826) was a prominent military officer who served in the army of Habsburg Austria during the French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1802) and the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815). He served as chief of staff for the campaigns of 1796, 1799, and 1800, and played an important role in the Battle of Marengo (1800), where he was captured. Von Zach received a number of military awards throughout his career, including the Military Order of Maria Theresa, and the Order of Leopold, as described in the inscription on the present portrait.
