Johann Herrmann, Austrian 1794-1880- Portrait of Anton Freiherr von Zach, half-length, wearing military uniform; oil on canvas, inscribed 'Anton Freyherr v. Zach gemahlt im / Jahr 1823 von Joh: Herrman nar da / mahls K.K. Feld Marschal Lieutenant / und Comandant der Festung Allmutz / Ritter des Militarischen M Theresien / Comendeur des Kaiserl. Leopoldi Ordens / Gebohren zu Pesth in Hungaren den 14 / Juny 1747 in K.K. Dienste getretten / den 16 July 1765.' verso, 69 x 55.6 cm. Provenance: Property from a European Private Collection. Note: Anton von Zach (1747-1826) was a prominent military officer who served in the army of Habsburg Austria during the French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1802) and the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815). He served as chief of staff for the campaigns of 1796, 1799, and 1800, and played an important role in the Battle of Marengo (1800), where he was captured. Von Zach received a number of military awards throughout his career, including the Military Order of Maria Theresa, and the Order of Leopold, as described in the inscription on the present portrait.
