Description

Circle of John Russell, British 1745-1806- Portrait of William Simpson, Esq., three-quarter length, seated by a window with a view of York beyond; pastel on paper, inscribed 'William Simpson Esq. / Corn Merchant / Micklegate / York' to the reverse of the backing board, 45 x 34.4 cm. Note: The present portrait appears to have been completed very early in the 19th century, and recalls John Russell's pastel portraiture. The work presented here is particularly reminiscent of Russell's portrait of a young man seated by a window which sold at Christie's, New York on 14-28 January 2021 (lot 79) for $8,000.
