Note: Rossini's romantic etchings of Roman architectural ruins were clearly heavily inspired by those of Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778).

PIRANESI. Veduta del Palazzo fabbricato sul Quirinale per le Segreterie de Brevi et della Sacra Consulta. Etching, 615x380 mm. Wide margins. State II/VI. Contemporary Roman issue. Good condition. Piranesi represents the "Palazzo della Consulta," a palace designed by Ferdinando Fuga for Pope Clement XII to house the papal secretariat of the principal council of state, the Sacra Congregazione della Consulta. After various functions over the centuries, it has been home to the Constitutional Court of the Italian Republic since 1955. The top of the facade is dominated by the large sculptural coat of arms of the Corsini family of Clement XII.

"The Civil Code, translated into Italian in 1806, came into force in the regions making up the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy. By express legal prescription (royal decree of November 15, 1818), the Italian version was introduced into universities and high schools in this edition, which provides a comparison with Roman law." (G. Alfa). After the fall of Napoleon, this Civil Code remained in force in certain Italian regions until 1837.
