Description

Circle of Jean-Baptiste Greuze, French 1725-1805- Head of a lady wearing a necklace and a frilled bonnet; red chalk on laid paper, 40.5 x 31 cm. Note: Greuze produced a number of red chalk studies of female heads which bear a striking resemblance to the present work, not only in subject-matter and medium, but also in the delicate handling of the chalk. These include a drawing which sold at Drouot-Richelieu, Paris, on 18 October 2019 (lot 79, €24,600), and another which sold at Christie's, Paris, on 27 March 2019 (lot 97, €82,000). Greuze's chalk studies and their delicate attention to their sitters' features heavily influenced the works of his pupils, including Pierre Alexandre Wille (1748-1821), who also created a number of chalk drawings similar to the lot presented here.
