Follower of Nicolas Lancret, French 1690-1743- Study of an elegant lady picking flowers; black and red chalk on laid paper, 21.8 x 14.8 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work is clearly heavily influenced by the approach of Lancret, a central proponent of the Rococo movement who was celebrated for his fête galante scenes, depicting elegantly-dressed figures in idealised garden landscapes. A drawing by Lancret in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum, New York [36.101.4] similarly illustrates a figure in an elaborate gown, in this case seated on the grass.
