Peter Monamy, English 1681-1749- The Royal William Firing a Salute; oil on canvas, bears label for 'Paul Mitchell, Ltd.' attached to the reverse of the frame, 61.2 x 76.9 cm. Provenance: The Collection of David Hotham, Esq. (prior to 1970). The Collection of Dr. D. M. McDonald (prior to 1992). Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 20 November 1992, lot 41 (for £28,000). Exhibited: Leggatt Bros. 1970; An exhibition of paintings from the collection of Dr. D. M. McDonald. No. 24. Note: Peter Monamy was heavily influenced by the works of the Dutch marine painters of the seventeenth century, including Willem van de Velde the Younger (1633-1707), whose drawings he collected. The subject of a warship firing a salute was a favoured subject of the artist, and another similar scene is held in the Royal Collection [RCIN 402429].
