Description

Circle of Andrea Appiani, Italian 1754-1817- Allegorical scene with figures holding attributes; pencil, pen, and brown ink on laid paper, 15.1 x 18.9 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work very much recalls Appiani's draughtsmanship, particularly in the loose, very linear shading, and the typically Classical, allegorical subject matter. A similar technique is evident in a drawing in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York [1988.150], and in a depiction of Apollo and his Chariot which sold at Christie's, Milan, on 22 May 2007 (lot 3).
