Description

Attributed to Antoine Monnoyer, French 1670-1747- Still life with peonies, orange blossom and tulips in a vase on a ledge; oil on canvas, 77.4 x 64.5 cm. Note: Antoine Monnoyer was the son and pupil of renowned flower painter Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer (1636-1699), and continued to produce continued flower paintings in the same style as his father long after the latter's death at the end of the 17th century. The younger artist's loyal continuation of his father's legacy earned him the nickname 'Young Baptist'. The Monnoyers were much imitated in France and England, and were so influential that the name ‘Baptist’ is applied to any overdoor from the Baroque period with a flower in it. The present work is heavily reminiscent of Monnoyer the Elder's elaborate and abundant floral still lifes which were hugely popular amongst contemporaries, with King Louis XIV (1638-1715) owning roughly sixty. The composition, depicting the bouquet in a simple urn atop a trompe-l'oeil stone ledge against a plain, dark background, focuses the viewer's attention directly on the bright flowers. A pair of similar still lifes by Antoine Monnoyer was sold at Christie's New York, 18 October 2023 (lot 123) for $75,000. We are grateful to Dr. Fred Meijer for suggesting the attribution on the basis of photographs.
