Description

Follower of Jan Dirksz Both, Dutch 1615/18-1652- Figures and donkeys on a path in a wooded landscape, with a city beyond; oil on canvas, 57 x 72 cm. Provenance: Property from a European Private Collection. Note: The present landscape strongly recalls the works of Both, whose oeuvre is characterised by sweeping bucolic landscape views often populated with figures and architecture rendered in historical styles. Both was a principal proponent of Italianate landscape in the 17th-century Netherlands, with his work fusing the more rustic figures of Dutch pastoral landscapes with grander, more classical elements borrowed from the Neoclassical painters of the 17th and 18th centuries, notably Claude Lorrain (1600-1682).
