Description

Circle of Gerard Soest, Dutch c.1600-1681- Portrait of a cavalier, standing half-length, wearing a yellow coat and a metal gorget with a white collar; oil on canvas, 76 x 63.5 cm. Note: Gerard, also known as Gilbert or Gerald, Soest, is believed to have travelled to England by the late 1640s, where he worked as a portraitist, with a style influenced by that of the English painter William Dobson (1611-1646). The present sitter's costume clearly dates the work to the Civil War period, recalling a number of similar portraits by Soest depicting gentlemen in armour, such as his portraits of Edward and Henry Herbert, both in the collection of the National Trust at Powis Castle [1180936 and 1180938]. The handling of the present painting also resembles that of Soest's portrait of a gentleman which sold at Sotheby's, London, on 13 October 2004 (lot 2).
