Stefano della Bella, Italian 1610-1664- A Satyr family walking; etching on paper, tondo, 20 x 21.7 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Della Bella enjoyed the patronage of Grand Duke Lorenzo de Medici (1449-1492), which enabled him to study in Rome and Paris before returning to Florence in 1650, where he continued to work for the Medici family. Della Bella was a prominent and highly prolific printmaker, producing over 1,000 prints which are notable for their inventiveness and originality. Indeed, the present work is classic example of Della Bella's fantastical and humorous scenes, depicting a family of satyrs on a leisurely stroll in a wooded landscape.

III, 564.) - The family tree emerges from the lap of an ancestor figure, framed on each side by a floral frame, and is crowned by a coat of arms with floral decoration, inscribed in two text fields. - Traces of an old restoration. He was particularly well known among his contemporaries for his illustrious maps and decorations, but his extensive oeuvre also included battle, military and hunting scenes as well as capriccios and animal series. One of his greatest patrons was Lorenzo de Medici, who enabled him to study in Rome between 1633 and 1636. - With predominantly very narrow margins around the platemark. Only with occasional small pale brown spots, but overall in very good condition. The impressions throughout extremely differentiated with pronounced ridge effect. Complete series of 24 etched plates from the series "Diversi Animali". Mostly signed or monogrammed in the plate.
