Godfried Maes, Flemish 1649-1700- Portrait of Bacchus, wearing a crown made of vines and holding a chalice; pen and brown, black, and white ink on paper, with attached strip inscribed 'G. Maes' and 'From Coln. St A Westcombe Bt. / to[?] Bernard Granville / C.B[?]' to the lower edge, bears indistinct collector's stamp verso, 26.8 x 18.5 cm. (unframed/mounted). Note: The present work is a striking example of Maes' works on paper, executed 'en grisailles', which illustrate Classical and Biblical scenes. The technique of the present work is typical of Maes' compositions, with his precise, detailed handling of the central figures, their musculature, and the fabric which drapes around them, contrasting with the looser brushstrokes of the foliage towards the background. This same approach can be seen in a number of Maes' works, including an illustration from Ovid's 'Metamorphoses' in the collection of the British Museum [1997,0118.1], and in a depiction of 'Ceres setting the corn on fire' which sold at Sotheby's, New York, on 31 January 2018 (lot 319) for $6,000.
