Note: The present work very much resembles the oeuvre of Calvaert, a Flemish painter who largely worked in Italy, and was particularly well-known for his small-scale paintings, often on copper panel. This nativity scene recalls Calvaert's colourful compositions, at once dramatic and intimate, with a Mannerist approach which served as a significant early influence on the development of the Bolognese School in the later 16th century.
