Circle of Francesco Capella, Italian 1711/14-1784- The Incredulity of Saint Thomas; oil on canvas, bears label inscribed 'G.B. Piazzetta' attached to the reverse of the frame, 86.7 x 71.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Capella was a student of Giovanni Battista Piazzetta (1682-1754), and was heavily influenced by the latter's compositions. Capella produced a number of intimate, dramatically-lit Biblical scenes, such as his painting of Salomon worshipping idols which sold at Finarte, Milan, on 16 May 2007 (lot 61). The present work also recallsthe artist's depiction of the Madonna and Child which sold at Sotheby's, London, on 8 December 2016 (lot 32), with the colourful fabric of the sitters' clothing in the present work, as in Capella's paintings, gesturing towards the Venetian circle in which the artist was working.
