Description
Circle of Francesco Fontebasso, Italian 1707-1769- Missionaries in the New World; oil on canvas, 74.7 x 132.7 cm. (unframed). Note: The handling and composition of the present work very much recalls the style of Fontebasso, a Venetian painter who studied under Sebastiano Ricci (1659-1734), particularly in its vibrant colour palette, and in the loose, free handling of paint, which also gestures towards the work of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696-1770), by whom Fontebasso was heavily influenced.
