Pair of children on buffaloes carved in wood. Emperor Guangxu also known by his temple name Emperor Dezong of Qing, personal name Zaitian, was the tenth emperor of the Qing dynasty, and the ninth Qing emperor to rule China proper. His reign, which lasted from 1875 to 1908, was largely dominated by his aunt, Empress Dowager Cixi. Guangxu initiated the radical Hundred Days Reform, but it was abruptly interrupted when the empress dowager staged a coup d'état in 1898. After the death of Emperor Tongzhi in 1875, Empress Dowager Cixi installed her four-year-old nephew as Emperor Guangxu, contravening Qing dynastic custom.

Ceiling ornament of Chinese construction. Qing Dynasty, 19th century. Wood carving gilded with fine gold. It presents marks of use, wear and some slight lack. Measurements: 28 x 73 x 5 cm. Fine gold gilded wood carving representing a dragon with a scaled body and expressive head with open jaws. Its imposing aspect is accentuated by the fact that it is accompanied by proportionally tiny figures compared to the undulating body of the mythological reptile. Possibly, it was part of the eaves of a Chinese construction.

Shapely Chinese porcelain brush pot with carved and lacquered wood stand, possibly Qing dynasty. With gilt rim and pigment depicting a mountainous village landscape along one side and a birds roosting among a cherry blossom tree along the verso. Painted mark along the underside, possibly reading "Qianlong Period Make." (Not including stand) Height: 4 3/4 in x width: 3 1/2 in x depth: 2 1/2 in.
