Bartolomé Pérez (c. 1634 probably in Madrid - 1693 ibid.) attr; Floral wreath with St. Anthony of Padua and the Infant Jesus The depiction of St. Anthony of Padua with the Infant Jesus was a popular theme in Italian and Spanish Baroque painting. In this painting, which was probably created around 1680-1690, the saint delicately embraces the boy standing on a book with one hand while holding a white lily, the symbol of innocence and purity, in his left hand. The figures are surrounded by a lavish garland of flowers, characteristic of the artist, and a red curtain, and the accentuated lighting sets the scene. The charm and artistic quality of the painting lie both in the effective depiction of the fragrantly rendered, diverse blossoms and in the intimate closeness of the sitters. Pérez probably studied under Juan de Arellano, the important Spanish still life painter, whose son-in-law he became in 1663. He himself successfully specialized in opulent floral still lifes and garland paintings in combination with depictions of saints, influenced by Daniel Seghers, the Brueghel family and Roman and Neapolitan painting. In 1689, Bartolomé Pérez was made a royal painter and created 55 flower paintings on a golden background for the so-called "camón del Rey" for Charles II in the Alcázar in Madrid. One of Pérez's best-known works is his garland painting with St. Anthony in the Prado in Madrid (inv. no. P003655). Oil on canvas; mounted label verso with handwritten inscription (in ballpoint pen) "Privatbesitz der Kaiserin Zita v. Habsburg (/) Wien" Label "Garde - meubles (/) Vallotton Frères, Vevey (/) 1515" (no. stamped). 99 cm x 71 cm. Frame. If one follows the trace of the two labels on the reverse of the frame, it is reasonable to assume that this painting from Zita's private collection was sold there during the stay of the former imperial couple Charles I and Zita in exile in Switzerland (1919-1922). It is documented that objects from their property were sold in Switzerland before they left for a second exile on the Portuguese island of Madeira in 1921/22. Provenance: from the collection of Zita Maria delle Grazie Habsburg-Lothringen, née Princess of Bourbon-Parma, former Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary (1892 - 1989), according to the label on the back of the frame; private collection Switzerland; auction Galerie Moenius, Muri bei Bern, 19.12.2020, lot 171, acquired there by the current owner. Attributed to Bartolomé Pérez (circa 1634 - 1689). Oil on canvas. Two labels with handwritten provenance and by a storage company in Vevey/Switzerland.
