Description

Pupil of Jean-Jacques HENNER (1829-1905) Eglogue Oil on canvas 50 x 93 cm; with frame 72 x 113 cm Studio stamp lower right: J J HENNER On reverse on stretcher: Collection Mme HENNER (followed by an illegible number); illegible labels Provenance: - Jules Henner Collection, inventory no. 818. - Ader sale, Paris, Hôtel George V, December 16, 1993, lot 8, "Les deux nymphes". - Sale, Saint-Dié, February 5, 1995, "Deux nus près d'un étang" ("Two nudes near a pond") - Eric Pillon Enchères sale, Calais, June 25, 1995, lot 8, "Mélodie au clair de lune". Acquired during the latter sale. History: "Mélodie au clair de Lune", also entitled "Les deux nymphes", "Deux nus près d'un étang" in the sales catalogs, or "Esquisse de l'Idylle" from the Petit Palais in the Jules Henner inventory, actually represents the Eglogue from the 1879 Salon, a painting kept at the Musée du Petit Palais in Paris. The labels (and the end of the inscription on the stretcher) on the reverse are illegible, but the 1993 Ader catalog specifies that it is N°818 from Mme Henner's collection, which is confirmed by its description in the inventory, and in which the dimensions agree: "Esquisse de l'Idylle du Petit Palais, tableau demeuré inachevé et qui semble être une étude de quelque élève surement retouchée par le maître, toile 90 x 50, 1904". We would like to thank Mme. Isabelle de Lannoy, author of the artist's catalog raisonné, for her information and clarification on this work.
