A FINE GEM SET MUGHAL JADE-HILTED DAGGER (KHANJAR) INDIA, 17TH/18TH CENTURY

A FINE GEM SET MUGHAL JADE-HILTED DAGGER (KHANJAR) INDIA, 17TH/18TH CENTURY Length: 40cm Provenance: With Thomas Del Mar, Circa 2018 Catalogue Note: This jade-hilted dagger is an exquisite testament to the artistic finesse and technical expertise of Mughal artisans. In Mughal India, jade was valued not only for its ornamental appeal but also for its symbolic values, including purity, harmony, and protection. Daggers adorned with jade hilts, therefore, carried both functional and symbolic roles, serving as emblems of power, beauty, and opulence. Their crafting process boasts a remarkable collaboration between various artisans. Expert lapidaries shaped the jade with precision, transforming it into a canvas primed to bear intricate gemstone inlays. The jade's soothing green combined with the rich hues of its gemstones bring depth and character to the present piece. A dagger of similar shape was sold at Christie's London, 28 October 2021, lot 45.
