Description

Architectural "Stipo" Venetian cabinet in lacquered wood with a black and gold background and inlays of marble, alabaster, mother-of-pearl and hard stones. It opens at the top to reveal a mirror on a red printed fabric background, compartments with small drawers, pigeonholes and small panels. It opens to a flap centered on a cartouche decorated with an incised flower in foliate garland reserves. The top is decorated with lozenges edged with polychrome rosettes in foliage reserves, centered on a marble cartouche. The temple-shaped front simulates three doors flanked by marble columns opening onto three small drawers in two rows. The upper part features a pediment flanked by alabaster reserves. Italy, Venice late 16th -early 17th century. Minor visible wear. Height : 43 cm - Width : 48 cm - Depth : 34 cm (closed) This type of "Stipo" cabinet with its characteristic format and numerous small drawers adorned with hard stones, found in Florence and Venice in the 16th century, is characterized by the refinement of its execution and the richness of the materials used. They became known in France with the arrival of Catherine de Médicis (1573-1642), who brought back some of her furniture from Italy, including numerous stipi.
