Philipp E. Hamburger, Wassererträgerin around 1900, signed E. Hamburger on the plinth, brown patinated bronze, an Art Nouveau beauty in a flowing dress standing on a naturalistic plinth, at the spring, holding two large water vessels, mounted on a multi-part base of garnet serpentine, the latter with small notches, in good condition for its age with minor rubbing, h bronze 14.3 cm, h total 19 cm. TSHOKWE, Angola/Democratic Republic of Congo. Hardwood, brown and honey patina. Maternity statue representing a woman breastfeeding her child standing on an almost circular base. This refined, high-quality statue is masterfully and finely sculpted by a master sculptor. The body and face bear numerous scarifications, and she wears bracelets and a necklace around her neck. 1st half of the 20th century. Height: 52 cm. Small chips and cracks. Provenance: Private collection, Perpignan. Note: This sculpture could be attributed to the sculptor Shatshombo (or a workshop). Shatshombo was a Songo sculptor who worked in the Tshokwe area and in Kasai in the first quarter of the 20th century. Revealed by A. Maesen, Shatshombo is the sculptor of several Tshokwe statues in various museums around the world, which bear similarities to our maternity statue.
