AN ITALIAN WHITE MARBLE GRAND TOUR FIGURE OF A PANTHER IN THE MANNER OF FRANCESCO ANTONIO FRANZONI (1734 - 1818), ROMAN, LATE 18TH CENTURY modelled seated and looking to sinister, on a rectangular foot and stepped black marble base 22.5cm high, 20.5cm wide, 11.8cm deep Catalogue Note Throughout the latter half of the 18th century, Franzoni was one of the leading restorers of ancient sculptures in Rome. Seen as a favourite of the Popes, he created a series of marble animals either copying originals from antiquity or composed of fragments of ancient originals. Franzoni, other artists and Grand Tourists frequently visited the Sala degli Animali, the Vatican's zoo of stone animals, and it is likely that this zoo provided the inspiration for the lot being offered.
