Description

A RARE REGENCY GONCALO ALVES BREAKFRONT SIDE CABINET BY GEORGE BULLOCK, EARLY 19TH CENTURY with parcel gilt decoration, the white marble top above seven cedar lined drawers each stamped 'G. Bullock' the top drawer with a paper exhibition label 'The BADA Art Treasures Exhibition, Bath, 1958 EXH NO. 170', flanked by a pair of hinged doors inset with gilt brass ebony framed and silk backed panels enclosing shelves on giltwood lobed feet 85cm high, 100cm wide, 39.3cm deep Catalogue Note George Bullock (1777/78 – 1818) was renowned for using unusual and exotic woods alongside indigenous woods in many of the pieces of furniture he designed. He was also known for being ahead of the game in the forms of furniture he designed. Indeed, when he moved back to London and he sold the contents of his Liverpool premises, they were described as ‘Fashionable Modern Furniture’ and at the sale of his remaining stock after his death, Bullock was referred to as ‘that highly ingenious artist’. The cabinet that features in this lot comfortably fits both criteria, being both progressive in design and incorporating a variety of woods into its decoration. It also features the same design of grille as a pair of bookcases made for Napoleon and that appear in the ‘Plans and elevations for St Helena’, dated November 1815. To further add to its appeal, it is one of only a handful of items of furniture that have been stamped by Bullock – in this instance to each of the seven drawers. Exhibited BADA, Art Treasures Exhibition, 29 th May to 7 th June 1958, Ilustrated in the Exhibition Catalogue, pl. 25, item 170 where exhibited by Boswell & Ward. Literature Clive Wainwright, George Bullock Cabinet-Maker, London 1988, p.104. In the description of the Napoleon bookcases (op.cit. pp. 101-104) there is a tantalising reference to a ‘small cabinet of similar form, without the upper part and fitted with small drawers’ which could very easily be referring to our cabinet.
