Description

MARCO ZANUSO (Milan, 1916 - 2001) and RICHARD SAPPER (Germany, 1932) for Brionvega Radio Cube TS 522. Italy,1964. In black color. In original box. It works. Measurements: 13 x 22,5 x 13 cm (closed). The TS 522 -also known as the "Cube"- is a worldwide icon of industrial design, and is exhibited in the most important contemporary art museums such as the MoMa in New York. It is a cult object composed of two cubic plastic "valves" that resemble a cuboid shell. In 1959, designers Richard Sapper and Marco Zanuso teamed up and their collaboration lasted more than 18 years until 1977. Starting in 1959, Zanuso and Sapper were hired as consultants to Brionvega, an Italian company focused on design, with the goal of competing with electronic products manufactured in Japan and Germany. Together they designed a series of radios and televisions that became classic design icons. The TS502 radio (1964) is one of their emblematic pieces. It consists of a rectangular hinged box whose opening reveals the speaker and control buttons. Another important design they made together was the compact, portable Doney television (1962), the first television to operate only with transistors. Using minimalist plastic aesthetics, the two designers also created the compact, articulated Grillo telephone for Siemens and Italtel. The Grillo is the first hinged telephone that folds in on itself, becoming a precursor for the design of mobile cellular telephones.
