Description

TOBIA SCARPA (Venice, 1935) & AFRA SCARPA (Montebelluna, 1937 - Treviso, Italy, 2011) for Maxalto. Artona 8551" armchair, 1980s. Brown mahogany leather. Measurements: 78 x 54 x 58 cm. "Artona 8551" is an armchair of singular design, the work of the couple Afra and Tobia Scarpa, produced by Maxalto in the early 1980s. It is made entirely of mahogany-colored leather, with intricate stitching inspired by the upholstery of luxury automobiles of the time. Designers Tobía and Afra Scarpa are considered one of the great references in contemporary design. Their designs, which resonate strongly in the work and inspiration of mass-produced pieces, stand out for a common link: comfort fused with the elegance of sumptuous materials, purity in their forms and simplicity in their geometry. Today, Tobia & Afra Scarpa's unique pieces can be found in museums in the United States and Europe, including collections at MoMA and the Louvre Museum. In October 2004, the Istituto Italiano di Cultura organized a solo exhibition of their architectural and design work in the U.S. cities of Chicago, Los Angeles and Washington.
