Description

Rosenthal Studio Line. Andy Warhol. Mercedes Benz ANDY WARHOL (Pittsburgh, USA, 1928–New York, USA, 1987). Paperweight and ashtray. In Rosenthal porcelain. Warhol signature in facsimile. Measurements: 4 x 9 x 9 cm.; 3.5 x 22 x 18 cm. Set of paperweights and ashtrays from Rosenthal, decorated with Warhol's Mercedes-Benz motif. In 1986, the Mercedes-Benz brand celebrated its centenary and commissioned Warhol to represent twenty Mercedes models, of which the artist selected eight. The German ceramics, porcelain and glassware manufacturer Rosenthal was established in 1879 in Selb, Bavaria, by Philip Rosenthal (1855-1937), and is still in operation today. Its first success on the market took place at the beginning of the 20th century, thanks to its delicate figurative statuettes and its table services, with simplified and refined shapes, very different from previous Art Nouveau pieces. After the Second World War, the factory completely renewed its repertoire and hired important designers such as Löwy and Wirkkala.
