MAURICE DAURAT (1880-1969) - BOÎTE

with rectangular body resting on a heel Lid with central grip Proof in pewter brassware with finely hammered surface Signed and monogrammed under the base Circa 1920-1930 Minimal bumps Height 8 cm - Length 17 cm - Width 9.5 cm Self-taught, Maurice Daurat first experimented with bronze, copper and silver before turning to pewter in 1906. Pewter became his material of choice for its discreet lustre, its very nature, enabling him to create simple shapes in contrast to the historicizing, highly ornamented forms of the artists of the turn of the century. With this work, he became part of the nascent Art-Deco movement, and was awarded an honorary diploma at the 1925 Exposition Universelle.
