Attic white-ground and black-figure cylinder lekythos in the style of the Haimon Painter. 480 - 460 BC H 19.6 cm, ø body 6.7 cm. The figurine depicts a central scene from the Eleusinian Mysteries. Flanked by the goddess Demeter and her daughter Persephone, Triptolemos sits on a winged chariot with ears of corn in his hands - the gifts of the gods for the cultivation of mankind. On the Haimon painter and his circle see E. Haspels, Attic Black-figured Lekythoi (1936) pp. 130-141; 241-249; J. D. Beazley, Attic Black-Figure Vase-Painters (1956) pp. 538-583; J. Boardman, Schwarzfigurige Vasen aus Athen - Ein Handbuch (1977) p. 162 with illus. 273-276. A few tiny chips to the mouth and foot, otherwise intact with a well-preserved white ground. Provenance: Since 2021 in the private collection P. A., Munich; previously in German family ownership since before 2000.
