Troisième essay: du chaud et du froid. Paris, Estienne Michallet, 1679. One volume. 8.5 by 15.2 cm. (4)-180-(2)-231-(2)-72 pages. Contemporary full basane, 5-rib ornate spine. Modest binding, with a bump on the 1st board and the upper headband slightly worn, worn edges. Small (unobtrusive) wetness in inner margin, otherwise very good condition. First edition of three texts, to be followed two years later by a 4th essay, on the nature of colors. They are published with three separate title pages, and separate pagination, but nevertheless united under the title: essays de phisique. Edmé MARIOTTE (1620-1684) was a great botanist and physicist. The essay De la nature de l'air contains the observation that the volume of gases varies inversely with pressure, a fact that had been discovered in 1660 by Robert Boyle. According to the Boyle-Mariotte law, the pressure and volume of an ideal gas are antiproportional at constant temperature and number of particles.
