Two hundred full-page engravings by the famous French caricaturist Grandville, depicting the "humanized" life of animals and many vignettes, slight reddening but overall a stupendous copy, coeval binding in red half morocco and marbled cardboard, five-compartment spine with gold decorations and animal depictions, title in gold letters, flaws and faults to upper cap of Volume I, slight abrasions, premiere tirage.

Large in-8 black half calf, smooth spine decorated with romantic gilt irons, double gilt fillet on covers (period binding). First printing of 41 plates and numerous vignettes in the text by GRANDVILLE. Covers worn, spines rubbed, scattered foxing. "One of Grandville's best books" according to Carteret. (Carteret, III, 241.)
