Description

Longo Sophist - Les Amours pastorales de Daphnis et Chloé [Paris, Coustelier], 1745. In 12°, 159 x 100 mm. Edition illustrated in intaglio, including a frontispiece by Antoine Coypel, 4 head vignettes and 28 compositions by Philippe d'Orléans engraved by Benoît Audran, the final plate known as "des petits pieds," and finally 4 elegant culs-de-lampe depicting pastorals, drawn by Cochin fils and engraved by Chedel, added especially for this 1745 edition, closing each of the 4 books of the work. Apart from these four new vignettes, these are the same figures as in the so-called "du Régent" edition of 1718, so much so that this date has remained on the antiporta. The last figure, "des petits pieds," whose design has been attributed to Count de Caylus, was not included in this first edition; engraved in 1729, it was generally added later. BEAUTIFUL COEVA BINDING IN SPUGNED VITEL, with spine finely decorated with small gilt irons, title block, gilt edges. Ex libris nobiliare to the counterplate.
