Description

DEUX GRANDS PLATS EN TERRE CUITE À DÉCOR SGRAFFIÉ COUVERT DE COULURES JAUNES, VERTES ET MANGANÈSE

probably central asia, 19th century Clay ceramic with incised and enameled green and brown decoration on cream slip, one with two mirrored deer and the other with a large bouquet surrounded by birds. Glaze chips and wear. Diameter: 37.5 cm Acquired by the present owner at public auction at Drouot, Paris. These dishes are similar in form and technique to some of the large Bamiyan dishes (see : O.Watson, Ceramics from Islamic Lands, Kuwait National Museum, The Al-Sabah Collection, 2001: p.268, cat.Ie.1.). The decoration, motifs and color of the glaze are unusual, making it difficult to date them from the Middle Ages.
