Artist info: important Spanish painter and graphic artist. Painter and graphic artist (1746 Fuendetodos/Aragón to 1828 Bordeaux), from 1760 to ca. 1766 pupil of the baroque painter Jozé Luzán y Martinez in Zaragoza, subsequently active in Madrid and Rome, from 1775 designs for the royal carpet manufactory Santa Bárbara in Madrid, 1780 appointed professor at the academy, 1786 entered the service of the Spanish king Charles III as court painter and from 1788 in the service of Charles IV, later engaged by A. R. Mengs at the royal tapestry workshops, numerous (portrait) commissions for the royal family and the high nobility, in the 1790s retreat from courtly art and his public offices and turn to political and socially critical prints, 1819 retreat to his country house, 1824 emigration to Bordeaux, source: Thieme-Becker and Internet.
