First edition of this album comprising 18 lithographed plates, all matted and titled. 1 title page, 1 page of justification + table. One of 100 copies of the first edition numbered on Japon paper and signed in blue pencil by Kubin. A superb album in an expressionist, caricatured vein, in which Kubin attacks critics with a gallery of monstrous, smug and grotesque characters. Worn dust jacket, torn flaps, only a few foxing marks on a few mats, boards intact. Rare.

Composed and drawn by Alfred Rethel, lithographed by A. Collette. Alfred Rethel (1816 in Diepenbend, near Aachen - December 1, 1859 in Düsseldorf) was a Prussian history painter and draughtsman. These six chine-mounted plates were based on Robert Reinick's counter-revolutionary poems after the Dresden uprising of 1849. They illustrate the following scenes: The resurrection of Death from his tomb; Death riding a horse towards the city; The infatuation of the people; Death in front of a tavern; The incitement to rebellion; Death offers his sword to the people Death on the barricades; Death victorious. In sheets. Marginal foxing more visible on text leaves.
