(GROSLEY J.-P.): Observations sur l'Italie et sur les Italiens, given in 1764, under the name of two Swedish Gentlemen. By M. G. London and Paris, De Hansy, 1774. 4 volumes. 9.5 by 16.5 cm. XXII-(2)-406; (4)-432-(2); (4)-430-(2); (4)-453-(1) pages. Contemporary full basane, 5-rib spine, ornate bindings, red title-pieces. Slight rubbing to headpieces, corners slightly worn, otherwise good condition. A few light freckles, otherwise very good condition inside. A few handwritten notes correcting the style in the margins (by the author?). Pierre-Jean Grosley (1718-1785) was a French historian and man of letters. In 1745 and 1746, he served on the staff of Marshal de Maillebois during the Italian campaign, as cashier of supplies. On his return, he wrote a history of the campaign entitled Observations sur l'Italie et les Italiens (Observations on Italy and the Italians). An original spirit, he had formed an Academy for Laughter in Troyes, with a few of his friends, whose Memoirs, composed at joint expense, were nothing more than banter and burlesque pieces, where apparent erudition disputed the comic nature of the subject. This did not prevent him from contributing to volumes IV and XIV of Diderot and d'Alembert's encyclopedia...

Paris, Desaint, 1759. In-4, LX-429[miscalculated 519]-[3]p. At the end is an insert for pages XIX to XXII, which should therefore have replaced said pages at the beginning. Full basane, blemishes, one spine partly split, some leaves with wetness.
