Facsimile of the Mainz Gospels from around 1250 from the Aschaffenburg Court Library, shelfmark MS. 13, Faksimile Verlag Luzern 2007, 71 partly full-page miniatures on gold ground, approx. 310 splendid initials with elongated leaf ends, the entire text is written in gold color, leather binding with a replica of the partially gilded and silver-plated metal plate of the Preetz Gospels with 5 medallions, depicting the four evangelist symbols and the enthroned Christ in the center, limited edition, 933/980, 37 x 28.5 cm, very good condition, endpapers with two small stickers of the Aschaffenburg library, with commentary volume in wine-red cloth, 29 x 29.5 cm, very good condition. The endpapers have two small labels of the Aschaffenburg library, together with the commentary volume in wine-red linen, 29 x 21.5 cm, very good condition, both in wine-red linen box with window and velvet cover inside, gold embossed lettering on the spine, 41 x 32 cm, partially with traces of use, 4377 - 0037

Die Handschrift war ein Geschenk Heinrichs III. an die Domherren in Speyer. Die prachtvolle, in Goldtinte gestaltete Schrift des Evangeliars sollte Gutenberg als Vorbild für seine Druckschrift dienen. - Sehr gutes Exemplar. Orig. leather with inlaid, silvered and partly gilt metal plate and orig. cloth with gilt title on cover and spine (without cassette). - One of 980 numbered copies. - With the commentary volume by Harald Wolter von dem Knesebeck. The metal plate on the cover follows the model of the Preetz Gospels from the convent of Preetz near Kiel. - One of the masterpieces of 13th century German book art, the manuscript was a gift from Henry III to the canons of Speyer. The magnificent script of the Gospels, designed in gold ink, that was to serve Gutenberg as a model for his printed type. - Very good copy.
