19th c. FRENCH SCHOOL Portrait of Mgr Mellon JOLLY, Bishop of Sées. Molded wood frame. 72 x 57 cm. Minor accidents. Mgr Mellon JOLLY (1795, Sézanne - 1872, Fontainebleau) entered the seminary of Meaux, then was ordained priest by Mgr de Cosnac, bishop of Meaux. In 1836, he was appointed Bishop of Sées, and on November 19, 1843, he succeeded Mgr de Cosnac as Archbishop of Sens, until April 22, 1867, when he resigned due to ill health. He was tutor to the children of the Duc de Blacas, the French king's ambassador to Rome, and chaplain to the Duchesse de Berry. He also became vicar general and archpriest of Meaux Cathedral. On August 12, 1864, he was appointed Officer of the Legion of Honor.
