ZOLA (Émile). L'assommoir. Paris, Charpentier, 1877. In-12, [2] f., III-569 p., contemporary half-sand calf, 5-ribbed spine, green title page, gilt fleurons, trailing scroll (browning, 2 f. short margins, tear not missing from margin of last f.). Seventh volume in the Rougon-Macquart series. Edition with the same date as the original and with the correct collation, but with a 14th edition on the title. Last blank page not preserved. Autograph signed letter from Emile Zola, "to George Bastard, his devoted colleague". G. Bastard (1861-1914), historian and publicist, was notably the founder of the Gazette illustrée. Provenance: G. Bastard (ex-dono); Panos Gratsos (Greek shipowner, coll. sold in 1981, Sotheby's: ex-libris). (Carteret II, 481).
